About this Project:

The sad fact is that over a million children are battling cancer this very moment, many in the grip of fear, pain and loneliness. At Love Transfusion, we’ve found that by connecting these children and their families with people who care — the resulting expressions of love and support help them significantly through their journey. Our mission is to provide simple, safe and effective ways of connecting children battling cancer with a community of supporters.

CASE STUDY: In September 2012, we ran a test using Facebook’s social network as a prototype platform. We shared children’s stories with Facebook users and stepped back to see what happened. The results were breathtaking, far exceeding our expectations. In every case, complete strangers by the thousands showered the recipients with expressions of love and support. Please watch the video (to the right) for testimonials from some of the participants.

Even with such an amazing response, we still saw room for improvement. Facebook was not designed to handle this type of social support, and as a result does not have some of the key features which provide the greatest relief. We also wanted to open up the opportunity to people not on Facebook, as well as eliminate any possibility of hurtful comments. So we developed our own proprietary software application which provides multiple ways to communicate expressions of support in a private, safe and secure environment.

“For the first time in history because of the Internet and mobile devices, we now have the ability to instantaneously communicate love and support with the click of a button.”

“Elizabeth was so excited to see all the well wishes and prayers sent from so many people.  It was absolutely amazing! Thank you for being so sweet and considerate!”

“My son Chris was facing relapse of his hodgkin’s lymphoma. At 14 he was scared and worried. Some one said I should write to Love Transfusion for help getting the support he needed while waiting. And over the weekend before his surgery the outpouring of support and prayers was almost overwhelming. And it also helped us connect with others that have faced what we were facing! We cannot express our thanks and gratitude enough for Love Transfusions! And can’t wait to see what’s to come! Thank you from our family and the entire Chris’s Crew!”

The program is web-based and accessible anywhere by Internet connection or mobile device.  The child and their family can then, at a glance, see they are surrounded by caring people connected with them at that very moment.  When a user logs off, the line goes away but their dot remains until they log back in.

Our original goal was to simply provide a visual experience on a map.  The connecting lines are a quick and easy way for the love transfusion recipient to see they are surrounded by people that care for them.  Later versions allowed for a database of pre-vetted and pre-canned messages that anyone can send.  Users with higher permission settings (such as family members and friends) can also communicate freely via private messages within the system, as well as send and receive photos and video communications.

Setting up an account is quick and easy – typically taking less than 5 minutes.  From that point forward, the program is as easy to use as Facebook.  By simply logging in, the user’s map and message center instantly begin displaying connections in real-time.

They’ll never feel alone again…
